Why Are Tankless Water Heaters Getting More Popular?

More homeowners are choosing to replace traditional water heaters with massive storage tanks with newer, tankless systems. What’s driving the increased popularity of tankless water heaters?

More energy efficient

A tankless water heater works “on-demand,” meaning it only heats water when it’s needed. This increased energy efficiency results in lower utility bills. In some locations, it may qualify owners for tax breaks from energy incentives.

Longer lifespan

The average tankless water heater can last 20 years or even longer, about 5 to 10 years more than a standard, stored water heater. This is because the tankless heater is simpler to maintain, with replaceable parts that are easy to find.

Smaller in size

A traditional water heater needs a water storage capacity — anywhere between 20 and 80 gallons. This means it takes up a lot of space. A tankless heater doesn’t use stored water at all, so it’s much more compact. You can also install a tankless water heater in more places in the home, even on an outside wall.

Cooler and safer

The tank in a traditional water heater can overheat, which makes it an elevated explosion risk. There’s no chance of that happening with a tankless water heater. Also, the exterior surface of a tankless heater doesn’t get hot, which can happen with a conventional water heater. Especially for a family with small children, that makes a tankless heater the much safer option.

Unlimited hot water

A conventional water heater only warms up the water it has in storage; when the tank gets empty, hot water has to wait until the tank is refilled. In a tankless heating system, water passes through the heating element whenever it’s needed.
